5 Recovering Alcoholic Behaviors to Support Long-Term Sobriety

Recovering-Alcoholic

Once you’ve made a commitment to go sober, you may choose to work the program or check into one of our rehab facilities. However getting there can be half the battle. We can provide a buddy, a wise and compassionate helper to accompany you. Sober escorts in Philadelphia or one of our many locations across the country will help you arrive safely and assure you that you don’t change your mind enroute. You should also use the following recovery behaviors to help support your long-term sobriety:

1. Understand your weaknesses – You are going to experience cravings and there are going to be triggers, which you’ll encounter in many forms. Learn what your triggers are so that you can avoid them. For example, if walking by a liquor store is a trigger, avoid that route when walking home.

2. Take care of yourself – It’s much easier to avoid triggers if you take care of yourself. The four physical and emotional conditions that tend to be the most responsible for relapse include hunger, anger, loneliness and tiredness. If you can control your emotions, then you’ll be able to act instead of reacting.

3. Be with people you can reach out to – Find a network of friends and family members that you can reach out to. Similar-minded people who are in recovery are good people to have in your network since it may be easier to reach out to them for support and comfort when you’re feeling cravings. You should avoid surrounding yourself with the same people when you developed your alcohol problem as this could lead to a relapse if they haven’t changed as well.

4. Be honest – Don’t try to hide the fact that you are an addict. If you do so, you may end up hiding signs and symptoms from yourself as well, which makes it easier to justify your behavior. Recovering alcoholics tend to be extremely honest because they fear that any kind of deception could lead them to relapse.

5. Give back – Alcoholics are self-centered due to the fact that their addiction is their priority. Learn to give back in ways that don’t just serve you. By committing selfless acts, you shift the focus from you and your struggles, which reduces the risk of wanting to escape and numb your emotions through alcohol.

These are five behaviors that will help you to remain sober on your journey to long-term sobriety.
